5 Things to Know Before you Come to Suny Oswego – for current HS students

  1. Suny Oswego is right on Lake Ontario, it’s going to be windy and you will experience lake effect snow wether you like it or not. Bring your Winter gear or prepare to face Jack Frost’s wrath.

2. While the winter weather may seem intimidating, Oswego also experiences plenty of beautiful weather. The great lake situated on thr north side of campus brings in beautiful breeze which is great for that early first semester heatwave. To go with this, Suny Oswego students get to experience all the beauty of a New York fall.

3. Suny Oswego is a very active town and campus, as it is NOT a big commuter school. If you’re on campus or in town during the weekends, you will be sure to encounter tons of students enjoying the Suny Oswego night-life.

4. The Suny Oswego dining halls (Cooper, Johnson, and Pathfinder) offer food that is well renowned for being some of the best in the Suny system. However, keep this in mind as you have unlimited dining hall swipes your first semester, and that freshman 15 is hard to keep off.

5. Professors on campus are extremely willing to help you out, but it’s your job to seek them out. Professors can’t hold your hand like a high school teacher, but they will help you to the end of the earth as long as you find the time and seek them out (during office hours of course).

Why SUNY Oswego is THE University for your Grandchild

The SUNY Oswego campus is full of natural beauty throughout all seasons, but there’s so much more to see on campus than a big lake and some pretty falling leaves. I want to ask Grandma and Grandpa, why should you continue paying my tuition? I know that you might not love my reasons, but at least I know they’re true.

  1. SUNY Oswego offers over 60 majors and 70 minors for your student to pursue. The two major categories that pull in the most students, are Broadcasting and Business. To go along with the Broadcasting program, SUNY Oswego offeres WTOP-10, the multiple time award winning news channel, that is well renowned across the entire SUNY system.

2. The SUNY Oswego dining halls, Cooper, Pathfinder, and Lakeside offer a wide array of both tasty and healthy dining options for your precious student; these options include:

  • Gluten Free meal options
  • Vegetarian and Vegan meal options
  • Dining Halls that are open for service from 7am to 11pm across campus
  • Fully staffed deli stands that operate during lunch, dinner, and late night meals, for students who don’t want what is offered on the hot line(s)

3. The SUNY Oswego Campus is friendly to students both with and without personal transportation like cars. Freshman on campus are allowed to bring up their own vehicles unlike many other Universities which restrict cars to sophmores and up. Even if students don’t have their own cars on campus, the campus is very walkable, as the longest walk you will have to endure is 20 minutes. For those that don’t want to, or can’t walk, buses run all around campus and into the surrounding cities.

4. For those guardians worried about their child/grandchild’s safety, the SUNY Oswego campus has a present yet not overbearing police presence which is active at all hours of the day, to ensure protection to all students. Students can either call the campus police, or if not able, they can use the Guardian phone app to discretely get police help.

5. Last but not least, SUNY Oswego is a fun campus. While academics are the most important thing for a student at their University, having a fun campus life also ensures that they will want to stay and continue learning. The University offers a smattering of clubs and groups that cover every possible thing your student could want to experience, from boardgames all the way to mock electoral debates. To go along with this, sports play a huge part in the SUNY Oswego experience, of course, with the most popular being Ice Hockey in the Deborah F. Stanley Arena. Seeing the Hockey Team and being part of the crowd, is something truly life changing.
